Pura vida! Costa Rica is packed with adventure, like whitewater rafting down tropical rivers, surfing on world-class beaches, and hiking in lush rainforests. 🌿 Wildlife abounds in this diverse landscape; don’t be startled the first time you hear a howler monkey—they’ll keep their distance! 🐒 We’ll see incredible views of volcanoes, visit cascading waterfalls, and walk in the country’s famous cloud forests. To make our trip even more meaningful, we’ll give back to local communities by participating in service projects. 🌍
Event programme
Itinerary Days 1-2: San José & Irazú Volcano Begin your Costa Rican adventure in San José, where we will meet our crew and Bold Earth leaders. 🌎 Our trip will start with high energy, exploring Irazú Volcano National Park, Costa Rica’s highest volcano at over 11,000 feet! 🌋 We will hike through the Prusia area, discover unique volcanic vistas, and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by stunning flora and fauna. 🌿 Accommodation: B&B 🏡 Days 3-5: Turrialba Adventures The adventure kicks into high gear as we head to Turrialba! 🌿 Our new location’s activities will start with an exhilarating zipline course through the rainforest canopy, admiring the forest from above. 🌳 We’ll explore the hidden gem of Las Trillizas Waterfalls, where three stunning cascades offer perfect swimming opportunities. 💦 Our time would not be complete without an adrenaline-pumping day of canyoning, where we will learn to rappel, down five different waterfalls. 🧗‍♂️ Accommodation: Guesthouse 🏡 Days 6-7: Pacuare River Expedition National Geographic has named this river as one of the top 10 rivers to raft in the world, and it’s an experience you cannot miss! 🌍 We’ll set off on our Costa Rica adventure with a two-day jaunt down the warm, jade-green waters of the Río Pacuare! 🌊 Surrounded by dense, lush rainforest and cascading waterfalls, we’ll switch between calm waters and exciting class II–IV rapids; keep your ears pricked and eyes peeled for toucans, parrots, sloths, monkeys, and more. 🦜🐒 A highlight is the riverside eco-lodge where we’ll fall asleep to the sound of rushing water and wake up to spectacular river views. 🌅 Accommodation: Eco-lodge 🏕️ Days 8-9: La Fortuna & Arenal Make a meaningful impact through the 1 Million Trees Project 🌱, where we will learn about reforestation efforts and help plant trees to combat climate change. 🌍 Lake Arenal is an ideal calm location for a kayaking excursion 🚣‍♂️, offering unbeatable views of the perfect cone-shaped Arenal Volcano 🌋. Visit Finca Don Juan for an immersive agricultural experience 🌾, where you’ll learn about (and taste! 🍫) local coffee, cacao, and tropical fruits while discovering sustainable farming practices. Accommodation: Hostel 🏨 Days 10-13: Surfing & Beach Time! Get ready for beautiful beaches that Costa Rica is known for! 🌊 The group will head to the warm blue waters of the Pacific coast, where we will learn from professional surf instructors 🏄‍♂️, and paddle out to hang ten on ideal beginner’s waves! When we’ve had our fill of the breaks, we’ll relax on the beach and explore the town nearby 🏖️. Accommodation: Guesthouse Listed above is Bold Earth’s intended itinerary for this trip. All itineraries are subject to change in order to provide the best possible program quality. Details
Flights Transportation to and from the adventure are the responsibility of the family. There are two options for booking flights: 1. Beginning in mid-March, Bold Earth will provide personalized flight recommendations to all enrolled families on international adventures. We do our best to group students together on flights when possible while balancing cost and speed of travel. All flight recommendations are optional. 2. If you prefer to organize the flight on your own, please send a request for information after making the reservation. We will be happy to help you connect with other families whose children are going on the same trip and flying in and out of the same area. Arrival and departure windows For all Costa Rica Active trips, students will fly into and out of Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) in San Jose, Costa Rica. Our trip leaders will be awaiting each of our students’ arrivals in the Juan Santamaría International Airport. All students, including unaccompanied minors, will be met by trip leaders directly outside of security, outside of baggage claim. A representative will help all unaccompanied minors collect their luggage and meet trip leaders. Students will call home as soon as they meet with our group. *Please do not book flights until your child has been officially accepted and enrolled on the Costa Rica Active trip.
